Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue—LM! Devlog #3
There's a fairly-popular song of the 20s titled "Has Anybody Seen My Girl?". I wouldn't call it a lyrical masterpiece, per se, but the lyrics are a good point to start off with:
Five foot two, eyes of blue,
But oh! what those five foot could do,
Has anybody seen my girl?
Turned-up nose, turned-down hose,
Flapper, yes sir, one of those,
Has anybody seen my girl?
So...is Gilda a flapper? That's somewhat of a complicated question, really. See, we're talking about an era where flappers were seen as "brash for wearing excessive makeup", not work-appropriate and targets of complicated sexual consumerism—so much so that some leaders wanted to ban them entirely. Man, it's tough being a woman!
Even more so for Gilda, who has gone through something that's still rather...socially unacceptable (her divorce). Let's take a slight deep dive into her situation as of right now...
There's a few things about her that I like to bring up: she is (as hard as it may be to believe) only 24 when this game begins. Gilda was married at the age of 18, which is the all-too unfortunate norm at this time for girls in well-to-do families. Everything she has to be and can be is first dictated by the Harts, then by the Northcotts.
Our girl Gil is all too aware of this, in fact, and it's a bit of a chip on her shoulder. In a world of increasing freedom and go-getters, she feels a bit...lost, frankly and fears that she's falling behind in this “race” with every passing moment. It's unfounded, I want to tell her, because growth is self-paced and cannot be compared—but that's my 2023 logic speaking, shaped by many trailblazers before me who have opened up paths Gilda would not have even known of.
How does the poor woman deal with all this, though? Her appearance gives us many clues: we find her with a sensible (even if edgily-short for the day) haircut, and in a neutral palette accompanied with demure but pretty earrings. She tries to compensate for her age by purposefully dressing in a way that reflects her maturity; an attempt to give herself credibility in a world where not many would take a 24 year old divorcee seriously. The air of grace and poise she works hard to maintain are not necessarily innate, but Gilda hopes that they will help keep unwanted trouble away (you and I know that's not true: it didn't work on Angelo). Still, we would be remiss to call her 'boring' in any way: the telltale eye makeup and the vixen-like crimson lipstick give her an edge (Gilda swears by Kissproof, actually). These serve as merely the springboard for Gilda's journey, as she takes this opportunity to transform into a whole new person.
Even though I'm the writer for this game, I'm keen to see where Gilda goes from this point! Will she really embrace the flapper spirit and 'turn down her hose', or will she look ahead and embrace the elongated, silk silhouettes of the 1930s? Well, we'll just have to wait and find out!
